The Department of Sports Science was founded in 1952. It is one of the earliest departments of Physical Education in China. The Department has made great progress in talent cultivation, scientific research, discipline construction, and sports training for more than 60 years. It has a postdoctoral research station and has the right to confer doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline of Sports Science, covering doctoral programs in Humane and Sociological Science of Sports, Physical Education and Training. It has a master's degree program in the first-level discipline of Sports Science, and has four master's degree programs in Humane and Sociological Science of Sports, Kinesiology, Physical Education and Training, and Ethnic Traditional Sports. On undergraduate level, it has 4 undergraduate majors including Physical Education, Sports Training, Martial Arts and Traditional Sports, and Sports Industry and Management.

The Department has established high-level research centers, including Center for Sports Modernization and Development, National Sports Industry Research Base of the General Administration of Sportof China, Institute of Sports Science and Technology, Institute of Sports Data Analytics and Research Center of Sports Industry and Physical Activity & Health. In recent years, the faculty members of the Department have undertaken more than 40 important projects at national, provincial and ministerial levels. A total of nearly 700 papers have been published in academic journals at home and abroad, including more than 150 papers have been published on top class journals. Meanwhile, the faculty members has won about 10 provincial and above level scientific research and teaching awards.

The Department has good teaching and training facilities, laboratories and reference rooms, including comprehensive training halls, swimming pools, track and field stadiums and tennis courts, making it possible to carry out the teaching and training for track and fields, swimming, gymnastics, martial arts, basketball, volleyball, football, table tennis, badminton and other sports. The Department has a physical fitness test base and an athletic human science laboratory, a multimedia classroom and a sports training laboratory. A large number of outstanding athletes, such as SUN Yang, XIE Zhenye, JIANG Yuyuan, BAO Yuqing, MAO Yaqi, WANG Di, etc. have studied here, and have made great achievements in domestic and international competitions such as the Olympic Games, World Championships, World University Games, National Games, National Championships, etc. A number of students have won the National "Sports Medal of Honor" and were selected as CCTV sports figures and "Top Ten University Students" in Zhejiang Province, and “Outstanding Graduates” at the provincial and university levels.

There are 29 faculty members in the Department, including 9 professors, 12 associate professors, 2 ZJU 100 Young Professors, and 18 of them have obtained doctoral degrees.
