Online program🫷🏼:International Organizations and Global Education Governance Summer Camp Held Successfully

In order to better serve the national strategy of opening up to the outside world and help cultivate high-quality talents who can work in international organizations and have international competence, as a support program for the 2022 Zhejiang University Graduate International Summer School and International Workshop, organized by the UNESCO Research Center of Zhejiang University, the APEID Linkage Center of UNESCO Zhejiang University and the UNESCO Chair of Entrepreneurship at Zhejiang University Education Chair, organized with the support of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and other institutions, the 2022 Zhejiang University International Organizations and Global Education Governance Summer Online Camp started successfully. Under the epidemic, teachers and students met in the cloud through the online ZOOM platform to discuss the cultivation of talents in international organizations. A total of 25 students participated in this event, including a total of 8 master students and 8 doctoral students.


In order to enhance the students' sense of participation, and to improve the participating students' deep understanding of international organizations and their interest in them, this project specially invited a number of young workers who are involved in international organizations to have a close contact and share their experience with you. These young workers are all around 20 years old, and most of them are involved in international organizations with a heart to remember what they can do to change the world. Therefore, these youth workers also mentioned this point in the sharing, and through the subsequent summary of the campers' experience, we can also see the campers' practical experience of the enthusiasm and sentiment of these youth workers to participate in international organizations.

In addition, we invited different types of staff from international organizations to share their work in detail, which was also a rare experience for the campers. As there are many different kinds of international organizations, and the internal structure of international organizations is also complicated, most of the campers had a vague concept of international organizations before participating in this activity, and only knew that international organizations are the institutions to solve international affairs. However, through the staff's sharing of their work, the campers also gained a deeper understanding of the work and structure of international organizations.

On the morning of July 3, at the beginning of the opening of the summer camp, Dr. Xu Bingna gave a detailed introduction to the main background, objectives and related arrangements of the summer camp. The first lecture was shared by Mr. Robert Parua, an education expert from the UNESCO Representative Office in China (Beijing, China). He started with a basic overview of UNESCO, and explained UNESCO's global education governance based on the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Mr. Pei Boyong also introduced China's commitment to sustainable development goals, mainly including China's national development strategy, 2035 China's education modernization strategy and China's achievements in poverty alleviation.

Professor Miao Fengchun, director of the Technology and Artificial Intelligence Education Department at UNESCO Headquarters (Paris, France), shared on the topic UNESCO and Global Education Governance. He first expounded his thinking on the research method of global education governance. Immediately afterwards, he introduced UNESCO's humanist educational philosophy and governance framework. After that, he returned to the perspective of reality, and discussed in detail the specific organizational structure, strategic planning and project implementation closed loop of UNESCO's participation in global governance as a global governance institution and an intergovernmental co-government. In the end, Professor Miao Fengchun expounded on the fact that UNESCO participates in global education governance through capacity building and international cooperation, actively carries out knowledge sharing and builds multilateral cooperation networks, etc. Questions such as value have been raised for consideration.

Dr. Meng Chuanping, who once worked as an intern at UNESCO's Paris Headquarters and Jakarta Office, and now works at the Development Research Center of Meizhou City, Guangdong Province, shared her experience of working in an international organization and what she gained as an intern in an international organization. She recalled that as a doctor of science and engineering, she successfully entered the United Nations for a two-year internship after graduation. She believes that the internship experience in international organizations will be of great help to her future career development. It has greatly exercised her ability to promote, implement and coordinate the specific implementation of projects, and has also laid a foundation for her to do a good job in her current work. .

On July 4th, Ye Zhi from the Cultural Department of the European Regional Bureau for Science and Culture of UNESCO (Venice, Italy) shared his own experience and shared how he became attached to international organizations. From internship to retention, past experiences are all experiences . She introduced three aspects of what an international organization is, what an international organization is doing, and what I can do in an international organization, and explained in detail the ways to enter the United Nations system, including internships, UNV volunteers, JPO, Consultants, job openings, YPP, and more. At the same time, Ye Zhi shared three experiences on How to seek career development in an international organization? new job opportunities.

Liu Tianyi from the UNESCO Headquarters Junior Professionals (JPO) (Paris, France) brought a wonderful internship and work experience sharing to the students. With the theme of Two Changes - Youth and the World at the Same Time, she shared with the students They showed specific projects and real life in international organizations, so that everyone had a deeper understanding of international organizations.

Professor He Yong, an adjunct professor at New York University and once the head of the Chinese language group of the United Nations Department of Languages, shared his views on the mission, function, function, role, organizational structure, and operating mechanism of the United Nations, as well as how young students can participate in United Nations activities. Professor He Yong gave a detailed introduction to the historical background and the entire development process of the establishment of the United Nations. He introduced the establishment process of the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the design concept and design process of the United Nations Building, and the design concept of the Security Council venue. The mission, the three pillars and the main departments of the United Nations system are discussed. At the end of the lecture, he encouraged college students to actively pay attention to international developments and actively participate in the affairs of the United Nations

On July 5, Mr. Chen Haojun, who works in the Cuban Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), shared with the campers his experience in working in international organizations at the beginning of his career. He gave a detailed introduction on the challenges and gains of working in international organizations, application skills and opportunities, and had in-depth interactions with the campers. His sincere and meticulous sharing also increased students' interest in the work of international organizations.

Next, Dr. Roger Y. Chao, Jr., Assistant Director of Education, Youth and Sports Affairs of the ASEAN (ASEAN) Secretariat, shared a theme on ASEAN and Southeast Asian regional education cooperation. Starting with the history of the establishment of the ASEAN Community, he introduced in detail the development of ASEAN as a community with the same vision and identity. Then, taking the ASEAN community vision in 2025 as the main line, he presented the campers with the main trends of ASEAN education actions towards 2025 through the interpretation of several important statements and plans. The coordination of higher education, the ASEAN Education Work Plan (2021-2025) and other aspects introduced the relevant content of the regionalization of ASEAN higher education. Through careful review, the students' understanding of regional organizations was enhanced.

On July 6, Mr. Ma Yansheng, the former Deputy Representative of the Chinese Permanent Mission to UNESCO, gave a wonderful lecture on the theme of What kind of talents are needed by international organizations: starting from UNESCO. He started from the classification of international organizations and the categories of international staff, the structure of intergovernmental international organizations and the categories of staff, the difficulties and challenges China faces in participating in international organizations, how to cultivate talents in international organizations, how to send talents to UN agencies, and what talents in international organizations should have. The six aspects of basic quality and ability systematically explained the composition, function and personnel selection of international organizations.

On July 7, Dr. Wesley Teter, consultant of the UNESCO Bangkok Office, gave a presentation on the higher education projects carried out by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Regional Bureau of Education. Starting from the 2022 World Conference on Higher Education, he emphasized the characteristics of fairness, inclusiveness, sustainability and creativity in the development of higher education at UNESCO. He also pointed out that conventions, social media and global conferences are all important avenues for the development of higher education, while giving a detailed introduction to the work of the Bangkok office.

Wang Li, who is going to work as a junior professional (JPO) at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, shared wonderfully about the application process, specific experience and personal insights of the two periods of internship and work in international organizations. She respectively introduced the main steps of applying for the UNESCO Bangkok Office Internship and Junior Professional Program, including the important time points for application, the general scope and basic form of written examination and interview, etc. In addition, she also reviewed her experience in participating in the two major projects of Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship Education during her internship in the Bangkok office. Her responsibilities included organizing expert meetings, compiling topic guides, and preparing workshops, etc. At the end of the lecture, she put forward seven suggestions from the aspects of interview preparation skills and work ability development, and encouraged everyone to consider various factors such as their own interests, career goals and organizational culture, and make bold attempts in job application. Be persistent in specific work.

On July 8, Song Ruoxiao, coordinator of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Youth Empowerment Alliance, shared with the students her work experience in UNDP. She reported on the functions of the United Nations Development Program and its youth co-creation laboratory, the way for young people to enter the United Nations, and how to improve related skills. In the sharing, she pointed out that there are multiple channels to enter the UN agency for internship, and encouraged the students to boldly socialize with foreign friends, seize the opportunity, and actively strive for it.

Afterwards, Mr. Han Qunli, Executive Director of the International Science Council and the Integrated Risk Research Program of the United Nations Disaster Reduction Agency, gave a lecture and sharing titled Main Platforms and Tools for International Scientific and Technological Cooperation. The lecture mainly introduced the core concept and mission of the international scientific and technological cooperation platform, the main tools to promote international scientific and technological cooperation, and personal qualities for participating in the work of international organizations.

Teacher Han believes that international organizations, regional organizations, and non-governmental organizations have various forms and complex and cooperative or restrictive relationships, and cooperate with international media to form an ecosystem. However, China's status in this ecological circle is not high enough, and it has not yet grasped enough right to speak. He also pointed out that the international cooperation framework after the new crown epidemic has not yet been finalized, which will be an important game space for new rules and new discourse. At the end of the lecture, Mr. Han shared the qualities that staff of international organizations, especially United Nations agencies, should possess, such as independent personality and rationality, solid professional ability, and vision of the world. On the same day, before the lecture, the appointment ceremony for the members of the Advisory Committee of the Zhejiang University UNESCO Research Center was held. Professor Kan Yue, the executive vice president of the School of Education of Zhejiang University and the director of the Zhejiang University UNESCO Research Center, issued a letter of appointment to Mr. Han Qunli.

During the first three days of the summer camp, students listened to the keynote speeches given by international staff and project experts from different international organizations, so that they could have a more intuitive understanding of the operating mechanism and working status of international organizations. Such face-to-face communication makes international organizations less distant and unfamiliar to the students. In addition, the lectures of professional knowledge from various experts also enabled students to have a deeper understanding of core issues such as the historical origins of international organizations, organizational structures, and the value orientation of global governance. During the three-day summer camp, the students not only had theoretical thinking, but more importantly, they received a deeper understanding of the work of international organizations from the incumbents and experts, which greatly promoted the students' understanding of the future. And the yearning and enthusiasm to participate in the work of international organizations.

This summer camp successfully covered three levels of undergraduate, master, and Ph.D. students, and this summer camp also has students from outside the school to sign up, which successfully expanded the influence of the project. The summer camp lasted a total of six days. Through the detailed sharing of international organization staff and relevant experts, students gained a new understanding of the functions and missions of relevant international organizations, and gained a new perspective for observing and analyzing the operating mechanism of relevant international organizations. . More importantly, many peers shared their own experience of participating in international organization projects, which provided a new path reference for students' future professional development and career planning, and also inspired students' enthusiasm to change the world with all their power. During these six days, the students gained not only knowledge, but also a new understanding of how my country should move to the center of the international education stage, and how China can play the role of a responsible big country in the global education governance of international organizations. And how to tell the Chinese story well, contribute to China's strength, and provide China's solutions.
